On July 7, 2026, Travel + Leisure named Koh Samui the world's number one island, ahead of the Maldives and the Galápagos. For a villa buyer, that reader vote measures something concrete: the direction international demand is moving, and how fast it is arriving.
What Travel + Leisure Announced
The ranking comes from the magazine's 2026 World's Best Awards, a survey of more than 207,000 readers who score each island on its beaches, nature, activities and places to stay. Koh Samui took 95.64 out of 100 and won for the first time. It passed the Maldives in second place and the Galápagos in third, and pushed out Greece's Páros, the 2025 winner, which fell to 24th.
The award did not land in isolation. Ten days earlier, the Travel + Leisure Luxury Awards Asia-Pacific had already placed Samui at the top of its regional island ranking, with its airport second behind Singapore Changi. Two separate juries, two methods, the same verdict.

A Title That Moves Money
A world's best island title does not stay in the travel pages. It settles real decisions: where to spend three weeks, where to book a honeymoon, where to place a second home. Samui's climb started before this vote. The third season of The White Lotus, filmed on the island, put its resorts and coastline in front of a global audience in the first half of the year, an effect Travel + Leisure named directly in its citation for the winner.
The second driver lasts longer. Samui has built a reputation as a wellness destination, with spas, retreats and care-focused hospitality, a segment that draws high-spending guests on long stays. That visitor is the one who, after two or three trips, starts reading listings.
The Real Bottleneck Is Land
Demand explains only half of the equation. Supply explains the other half, and it is locked. On Koh Samui, close to 12% of the surface is buildable, with the rest mountainous, protected or unusable. Of that thin share, roughly 6 to 7% of land remains available.

The West Coast, and THEVA Horizon
The ranking's spotlight points east, Chaweng first, crowded and already built to the waterline. The west coast, around Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam, runs the other way: lower density, turned toward sunsets over the Ang Thong archipelago, spared the continuous sprawl. It is also where low-impact development still has room to define the character of a stretch of coast.
THEVA Horizon holds that side, directly below the Ida B Domaine hotel. It catches the same rise in island recognition without the saturation already pressing on the east. When a destination wins a world title and its land tightens, the quiet, well-placed zones are the ones that absorb the value gap.

A world's best island title is a leading demand indicator, set on a market whose land supply is structurally closed. Whether Samui draws people is settled: 207,000 readers answered it. The open question is location, choosing a spot that holds its value once the spotlight moves on. The west coast, still preserved, is where that answer gets built.
