On 26 August 2026, Time Out ranked Bangkok the best city in the world for nightlife, ahead of Berlin, New York and Melbourne. A year earlier, the Thai capital sat in 13th place. For anyone holding or buying property on Koh Samui, one hour away by plane, that jump says a great deal about where travel demand is heading.
How Time Out Built the Ranking
The ranking rests on fieldwork rather than editorial opinion alone. Time Out surveyed more than 24,000 residents across 150 cities, then cross-checked their answers against the views of over 100 local editors and experts. The final score weighs resident opinion at 70 percent and expert opinion at 30 percent.
The criteria go well beyond counting bars. They cover the quality of nightlife, the cost of a night out (bars, clubs, live music, theatre, cinema), the sense of belonging, and the general atmosphere of the city, including how welcoming and safe it feels. Only one city per country can appear in the top 20.
Bangkok won on both halves of the scoring. 73 percent of residents rate their city's nightlife as good or exceptional, and Time Out's expert panel gave it 95 percent favourable reviews.
The 2026 Global Top Five
| Rank | City | Country |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bangkok | Thailand |
| 2 | Berlin | Germany |
| 3 | New York | United States |
| 4 | Melbourne | Australia |
| 5 | São Paulo | Brazil |
In Southeast Asia, only Hanoi (15th) and Singapore (19th) also made the list. Bangkok climbed twelve places in a single year and moved ahead of cities that have been building their after-dark reputation for decades.
What Time Out Saw in Bangkok
Time Out highlights the range on offer: rooftops, clubs, late-night street food, small neighbourhood cocktail bars. The Time Out Bangkok team points to Silom and Soi Decho, Chinatown and its Soi Nana, Thonglor, and high-altitude bars such as Sato San on the 32nd floor of the Moxy Ratchaprasong.
One detail stands out in their description: the street itself is part of the night. Pavements stay busy late, street food runs alongside the evening, and venues come across as welcoming, even to someone discovering the city for the first time.
This is the picture travellers carry home from Thailand. It is also the one that brings them back.
Why a City Ranking Matters for Samui
The Time Out ranking says nothing about Koh Samui. The connection runs through the way travellers structure their trip.
Bangkok is the entry point for most long-haul flights into Thailand. Visitors spend a few nights there, then take a domestic flight to the islands. Samui sits roughly one hour from the capital with daily connections, so an evening on a Sukhumvit rooftop can be followed by lunch facing the Gulf of Thailand.
"Bangkok at night, Samui the next day: two opposite experiences, one hour of flying apart."
Every global ranking Bangkok wins puts the country back at the top of destination lists. After the energy of the capital, many travellers look for the opposite: the sea, quiet, a villa where they sleep well. Samui captures that second half of the journey.
An Island That Chose Quiet
Samui never bet on mass party tourism. Airfares and local price levels pushed the island towards a demanding clientele that books private villas rather than standard hotel rooms.
That clientele resembles the one Time Out describes in Bangkok. These are travellers who want to experience a place from the inside: long villa stays, private dinners, boat trips out to the Ang Thong marine park.
In August, Thailand also topped the Ipsos index on satisfaction with love life. The two rankings measure different things, yet they return the same image: a country people visit for the experience of living there as much as for the scenery.
What This Changes for an Investor
The rental value of a villa depends on how many travellers choose the country, then on the share of them who continue to the island. International distinctions move the first number. Samui's accessibility from Bangkok moves the second.
THEVA Horizon sits on the west coast at Lipa Noi, directly below the Ida B Domaine hotel. This is the sunset coast, quieter than the eastern beaches, and access to it keeps improving. When owners are away, the hotel team markets and manages their villa for exactly this clientele arriving from Bangkok, a model detailed on the project page.
Final Thoughts
In one year, Bangkok moved from 13th to 1st place worldwide for nightlife, on the strength of 24,000 residents and around a hundred experts. For Samui, the effect is indirect and concrete at once: every traveller drawn to the capital is a potential guest for an island one hour away. The villas at THEVA Horizon are built for that second chapter of the trip.
