Why Aruna

The charioteer. In Vedic tradition, Aruna drives the chariot of Surya, the sun god: he rides ahead of the light.
The golden hour. The moment the island slows down and the sea turns to gold.
Every THEVA residence begins with a long conversation about its name. For this one, the two of us arrived from opposite ends. One came with names of gold, sunsets and golden hours. The other with Sanskrit, its gods and its old poetry. Name after name crossed the table.
Then one word ended the debate. Aruna: in the Vedic texts, the charioteer of Surya, the sun god. The one who rides ahead of the light, and whose name is the very colour of the sky when the sun sits low: that red-gold blaze the island knows by heart. A singular meaning, a sound that travels, no namesake anywhere around.
In the old stories, Aruna announces the morning. On this hillside, he waits at the other end of the day, when the sky over the marine park catches fire. Same light, same gold.
This place could only carry one name.
The golden bowl
Some places are named by poets without knowing it. Ang Thong, on the island's west coast, means the golden bowl in Thai: a name the light takes seriously every evening, when the sun comes down over the Ang Thong National Marine Park and its forty-two islands scattered along the horizon.
This is where Aruna stands: 8,500 square metres of gentle hillside above the bay, held under full Chanote title, turned to the west. The sea in a wide arc, the marine park in the distance, and every evening, the slow fire of the sunset. A few minutes below, the quiet villages of the west coast; next door, a hotel the THEVA group already operates.
A day here does not simply end. It sets, slowly, in gold.
